David Fishwick, owner of a minibus sales business based on Byron Road, Colne, was flying to Wales in his helicopter when he picked up a radio message calling for assistance for the pilot, who had got into difficulties close to Barton Airfield, near Manchester. Mr. Fishwick happened to be in the vicinity, being some eight miles away, and was the first person on the crash scene, where he found the young pilot had had a miraculous escape. He said “The Main said he had only about 15 hours flight experience and as such he should not have been flying unaccompanied. He had got into difficulties after taking off and reported his engine kept stopping and starting. Air traffic control has advised gim to return to ground but then his engine had failed about 700 feet up higher than the height of Blackpool tower. He had nosedived into a ploughed field and been thrown clear. He could quite easily have been killed but apart from crying and being a little shaken up, he did not seem to bad. A helicopter rescue is a one – off for my log book, but the main thing is that I managed to get the man safely back to base.” The man was piloting a microlight similar to those frequently seen over the nick of Pendle. The weight of the engine led to a speedy decent following the engine failure. Mr. Fishwick flew the man back to Barton in his helicopter, where he was handed over to medical staff to check his condition, before continuing his journey to Wales. |
